This route begins in the ancient Forges d’Orlu, under the Dent d’Orlu in the French Pyrenees. And we will walk the path of the south side of the Oriège, which is a river in the southwest of France, in the department of Ariège, France.
We start the route in the parking lot, at 912 meters above sea level and we are going to visit the Oriège waterfall. An idyllic place due to its forests, bridges and river route, all covered in green moss that has perfectly withstood the summer.
We follow the trail markings (yellow and red) in a downstream direction and since we cross the Oriège river in the starting area, we will walk along the right bank of the river and we will not cross it until we reach Ax les Thermes.
We walk enjoying the landscape as it is not complicated, but we do enjoy the environment a lot and soon we arrive at Orlu. It is the first small town that we meet and where we join the GR 107 Camí dels Bons Homes, although in the opposite direction.
We continue along the path and sometimes walk, until we find the small town of Orgeix, a cultural heritage of Occitania, and easily recognized by its bridge and Notre Dame de la Visitation church.
We continue on and at the exit of the Orgeix village, we see the dam that was built in 1941 for the hydroelectric power station and generated the Lac de Campauleil in front of the Château d’Orgeix. Beautiful views!
We continue on and when we arrive at Ax les Thermes we cross the river to enter the town, but first we stop to see one of its hot springs that flow directly into the Oriège.
It is a simple route, without any difficulty, but it is worth it due to its natural environment and the magnificent geographical location it has. Note that it is not to circulate with what support is needed to recover the cars or to undo the road.
