This path, PR-1 Vereda do Pico do Areeiro, connects two of the highest peaks on the island of Madeira, Pico Ruivo (1862 masl) and Pico do Areeiro (1817 masl), crossing part of the Massif Central de la Montaña, an area integrated into the Red Natura 2000.
For this we go up by car to Pico do Areeiro. Right where Radar no. 4. And the first thing we do is climb the peak referenced by its geodetic point.
We continue, already descending, along the paved road towards the Miradouro do Ninho da Manta where we take pictures with the wonderful surroundings.
We advance through Pedra Rija and we arrive at the first tunnel. The Tunel do Pico do Gato. This route goes through quite a few tunnels. They are relatively short and do not require lighting, beyond the mobile flashlight if there are puddles of water. We continue, we pass other two smaller ones and then we do another longer one under the Poio Moledo. And then another small tunnel that takes us to the lowest point on the route. Now we have a steep climb to Pico Ruivo helped by the stair platforms installed to help us.
Finally we arrive at the House of Ruivo and we have the last attack to the top of the island. El Pico Ruivo (1862 masl) and its viewpoints.
Now we have to return to the starting point, undoing the road. So it is very important to have dosed our forces. It is not a dangerous or difficult route. It is very controlled but its high distance and unevenness can make it difficult for some people not used to going to the mountains.
