We continue with another route in the Učka Nature Park, Croatia, but this time we start from the Opatija side, which was formerly known as the “Austrian Nice.” It was a very cosmopolitan city where, since the mid-19th century, kings of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, emperors, aristocrats, wealthy people, and famous artists resided.
We ascend the slopes of the Učka Nature Park, specifically to Vedez, where we will begin the route, which will be a combination of always well-marked trails. We start from its small parking lot to climb up the trail marked as 71-Orjak 30min. This will already give us an idea of the park’s beauty and lushness. Soon, we will reach a fork marked as number 11-Beljač 15 min. At this point, we will see a stone with the characteristic red dot of the markers, and in the center, there is a bronze plaque with the inscription Beljač 784m. Next to it, there is also a cabin built with wooden sticks.
We continue along the trail marked as number 33-Crni VRH and later with 12-Crni vrh 1:15h. After a while, we will reach another junction and take the 32-Zvoncev vrh 1h, followed by 30-Zvoncev vrh 40min, and then 75-Zvoncev vrh 40min. Finally, we take the 72-Zvoncev vrh 10min. Here we reach the summit of the route, Zvoncev Peak at 972 meters above sea level. There, we sign the summit book, leaving a dedication, and begin our descent via 71-Majkovac, from where we can enjoy beautiful views of the Adriatic and the Rijeka Bay.
We will continue descending along the 71-Orjak trail until we reach our starting point, Vedez. And if you’re the type who likes to end the day with a good dinner, we recommend doing so at the small port of Volosko.
