We began our adventure in the picturesque village of Masueco, located in the northwest of the province of Salamanca, in the heart of the Arribes del Duero Natural Park. From there, we took the Arroyo de las Fontanicas, where an informative sign situated us in this privileged setting.
Pozo de los Humos
Our first stop led us to the majestic Pozo de los Humos, an impressive waterfall formed by the Uces River, which plunges from a height of 50 meters. This waterfall occurs due to a geological fault that divides the riverbed, creating a water curtain that generates a cloud of vapor, giving rise to the name “Pozo de los Humos.” The force of the water and the rocky surroundings make this place a unique natural spectacle in the Iberian Peninsula.
The writer Miguel de Unamuno, captivated by the beauty of this spot, described it in 1898:
“It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls that can be seen among those rugged cliffs.”
To access the viewpoint, we followed a path leading to a cantilevered bridge approximately 6 meters long, offering spectacular views of the waterfall and the surrounding area.
Cascada del Piñero
After enjoying Pozo de los Humos, we returned to the parking area and took a right turn, ascending a path that led us towards Cerrajollo and then to Monte Roto. From here, we headed to Trincalino, a natural viewpoint that allowed us to gaze upon the Tagus River in the area near the tail of the Aldeadávila reservoir.
Subsequently, we descended a winding path leading to the Cascada del Piñero, a waterfall approximately 50 meters high, divided into two sections: one about 15 meters and another 8 meters, with rock steps and forming the Pozo de los Lirios at its base. Along the route, we traversed a path secured with ropes and chains beneath the waterfall’s curtain, providing a unique and refreshing experience.
Mirador de la Desembocadura del Río Uces en el Duero
We concluded our route at the Mirador de la Desembocadura del Río Uces en el Duero, where the landscape unfolded before us, offering panoramic views of the confluence of both rivers and the surrounding natural environment. This viewpoint was the perfect ending to a day of hiking that combined nature, history, and pure beauty.
