Pico de las Tres Provincias and Litueros Waterfall

Today we visit Peña Cebollera, also known as Cebollera Vieja or the Pico de las Tres Provincias, one of the most emblematic mountains in the Sierra de Ayllón and a unique geographical point: the exact meeting place of Madrid, Segovia, and Guadalajara.

We begin the route at the car park next to the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, in the Somosierra Pass, a place steeped in history. Here, on November 30th, 1808, the charge of the Polish lancers and the advance of Napoleon’s French troops forced open the way toward Madrid in a brief, brutal, and decisive episode of the Peninsular War.

We cross the old N I A road and follow the track of the Camino Peña Cebollera Vieja, passing Prado Antón and its spring. Further ahead, we stop at the Litueros Waterfall Viewpoint, where we can admire the magnitude of this cascade, considered the tallest natural waterfall in the Community of Madrid.

We continue climbing, leaving behind the ruins of Pedro Municio’s house and crossing the Las Pedrizas stream, until we reach the path that turns right and leads us toward the upper slopes of the Sierra Cebollera. The trail progresses between gentle summits, passing close to Cabeza del Tempraniego and Cerro del Recuenco, until we finally reach Peña Cebollera, at 2,128 m above sea level.

This peak is one of the highest points in the Central System and the exact spot where the three provinces meet. At the summit we find the border monolith, along with wide views that stretch across the northern plateau and the surrounding mountain ranges. Two important rivers rise on its slopes: the Jarama and the Duratón.

We descend via Peña de los Abantos, passing the Reajo del Oso Viewpoint, where you can often see the glider students from the Somosierra Gliding School practicing overhead. We continue down toward the Peña del Chorro, where the stream of the same name plunges down to form the Litueros Waterfall, one of the most beautiful and iconic cascades in the Sierra de Ayllón.

Finally, we return to the Somosierra Pass, the starting and ending point of this varied, complete route filled with history and nature.
