Monte Buciero rises above the seaside town of Santoña (Cantabria, Spain), and today we’ll walk around its perimeter following the route marked by the Santoña Town Council as Senda 1: Faros y Acantilados. It’s a popular and accessible trail, although recent storms have left a few sections slightly affected.
We start in Santoña and head toward the Fuerte de San Martín, which can be considered the true beginning of the route. The initial climb is straightforward, and soon the cliffs and the spectacular views of the Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Park open up before us.
The ascent winds between old batteries and impressive rock walls until we reach the first viewpoint: Punta del Fraile. We continue climbing a little further and then begin the descent that leads to the turnoff for the Punta del Caballo Lighthouse. Unfortunately, as mentioned earlier, the path remains closed. Access was “temporarily” shut down at the end of December 2025 due to several landslides, and this Easter 2026 it is still closed for safety reasons, with no reopening date yet. Two inspections have already been carried out, and a drone survey is planned to identify the critical points and draft the repair project. So, patience.
Fortunately, this doesn’t prevent us from completing the rest of the route. The only inconvenience is a few fallen trees that require a bit of agility to get past.
We continue on to the Faro del Pescador and then reach Punta del Águila, where we enjoy magnificent views over Berria Beach. From there, we head toward El Dueso and descend along a path that brings us back to Santoña. In fact, we walked right past it and had to backtrack to find it.
