Today’s route starts from Vrsar, a town in the Istria region of Croatia. We will be hiking along the Lim Channel, also known by most as the Lim Fjord.
The Lim Valley (Limska dolina) is the valley of the Pazinčica River, 35 km long, which transforms into the Lim Bay (Limski zaljev), a 10-kilometer-long estuary. The Croatians sometimes also call it Limski kanal (“Lim Channel”) due to its narrow width. The estuary is sometimes referred to as a fjord, although in reality, it is not a fjord but a ria, because it was not carved by a glacier but by the river eroding the soil on its way to the Adriatic Sea when the sea level was lower.
The Lim estuary has the appearance of a canyon. The sides rise up to 150 meters, descending to 20 meters when they reach the sea.
We walked along its northern side, and even though it was a hot midsummer day, it wasn’t too bad because part of the route is shaded by trees.
About halfway through, we descended to see the Pirate Cave Bar, which is quite interesting, where we had a beer among tourists arriving by boat. We then continued to the small beach where we took a dip, and on the way back, we followed a higher path to Vrsar, where we had lunch.
