Teide National Park: Llano de Ucanca – Roques de García – Mirador de la Ruleta

We begin the route along the marked trails of the Llano de Ucanca viewpoint. Before describing the itinerary, it’s worth noting that on some days this trail may be affected by mouflon hunting drives (Ovis orientalis Gmelin, 1774), an invasive exotic species introduced into the highlands of Tenerife in the 1970s. According to the Cabildo, it poses “a serious threat to the conservation of certain plant communities.” Fortunately, today we were not affected.

We continue towards the western side of the Roques de García, ascending through the Las Escaleritas area until reaching the Roques de García themselves, where we reach the highest point of the day: 2,188 m a.s.l.
We then head towards the iconic Roque Cinchado, located at 2,171 m, famous for appearing on the old 1,000-peseta banknotes and part of an alignment of large rock formations —remnants of the island’s ancient summit— known as the Roques de García.

From there, we continue to the Mirador de la Ruleta and finally descend to return to our starting point at the Llano de Ucanca viewpoint.
