Roldán Anti-Aircraft Battery – Roldán Viewpoint

Today we suggest a short and easy route, although with a considerable elevation gain, ideal for those looking for an intense hike without covering too much distance.

The route begins at the Tentegorra parking lot (Cartagena), known as Subida a Roldán. Right at the start, we find the information panels for the Roldán Trail, which will be the itinerary we follow today and which we describe below.

The path starts as a track and gradually turns into a trail. It is in this section that the ascent becomes more demanding, concentrating most of the elevation gain. In fact, after just 2.6 km from the start, we reach the top of the Roldán Batteries, having already covered approximately 97.8% of the total elevation gain of the route.

The Roldán Anti-Aircraft Batteries were designed as part of the 1926 Defense Plan, with the aim of protecting the strategic Cartagena Naval Base against potential aerial attacks. The installation was completed between 1932 and 1933 and was equipped with four Vickers 105 mm anti-aircraft guns (model 1923), capable of reaching targets at about 13,000 meters horizontally and 7,000 meters vertically.

Although the day is overcast and not ideal, the views are still spectacular, offering panoramas of the Bay of Cartagena, Las Canteras, and the coastline all the way to Cabo Tiñoso.

To complete the route, we begin the descent toward the Roldán Viewpoint and from there return to the Tentegorra parking lot, closing a short but very rewarding route, both for its historical significance and scenic value.
