And we could not leave here without seeing the wonderful black hole of Covão dos Conchos where millions of liters of water are passed every year!
This curiosity is located in the South Center of the Serra da Estrela in Portugal. You can arrive by car to the starting point, Lagoa Comprida. Its dam was projected in 1910 and has had successive extensions to reach what is now that can hold 14 million cubic meters of water.
We started, the easy route, by the track that was surely used for the construction of the other dam of Covão dos Conchos. The slope is small and at times it is stony due to the action of the weather and the steps of the years.
We arrived in an hour to the famous lake of Covão dos Conchos. But initially you do not see the hole in the lake anywhere. And in fact, you have to pass the small dam around the lake and at the end in a small curve, not visible until now, the famous black hole of 4.6 meters in diameter appears before us. Is awesome! Too bad the water level is flush and does not suck anything. But they say that when the water passes, the noise is deafening.
The mystery of the hole of the Covão dos Conchos, is not more than drainage of the hydroelectric complex of the Serra da Estrela, made by man built with granite and cement, back in 1955 when the dam was made, to drive the water 1,5 km to the city of Lagoa.
Now the hole is perfectly made up by nature and is a great place to take pictures. But surely it is more advisable in the spring months where the water passes.
