Nave da Mestra and Covão dos Cochos – Serra da Estrela

For the second time we visit the Sierra de la Estrela again. Last year we did a MTB route: Valhelhas – Serra da Estrela and another one of WALK: Lagoa Comprida – Covão dos Conchos

For this we stayed at Casa d’Avenida de Manteigas. We recommend it! For something it has ratings close to 10!

From there we drive up to the Lagoa Comprida where we parked the area destined for her next to the dam.

We begin the walk along the track that contours the Lagoa Comprida on its left side along its entire length.

In a few kilometers we reach the curve that would take us to Covão dos Conchos, but this time we left the track along a path lost among the vegetation of the plain. It is easy to follow but you must use the GPS. Little by little we arrived at the Nave da Mestra. One of the most beautiful and magical places on the Sierra plateau. At 1700 meters of altitude, which looks like a gigantic ship, it is one of those places well hidden in the bowels of the Serra da Estrela, of green fields flanked by fractured granite blocks that, in fact, are really scary. There are other ways to get to this magnificent place, such as the PR-4-MTG and PR-5_MTG. But we wanted to connect this with the other magical place of Lagoa Covão dos Cochos.

The Nave da Maestra has long served as a refuge for shepherds and their flocks. Today, in addition to the shepherds, it also houses mountaineers like us.

After enjoying the place. We continue with the route through an impression of a crack that opens the granite rocks in two vertically and makes us appear on its top. We continue on a quiet route going up to the geodesic point of Curral do Martins of 17dos1 meters above sea level.

Then we look for the path of Vale da Barca but sincerely. This connection that you can follow by the marks of the milestones. It has not been used for a long time and is quite covered with vegetation. Although they are few meters it costs to pass them. Once on the path of Vale da Barca, everything is normal and you can easily reach Covão dos Conchos where, although it is our second visit, we were just as amazed as the first.

After resting and taking the corresponding photos we climb to the top of Charcos and initially we want to cut to return to the start route, but although you see on the map that we are very close. We prefer to break the road since it was enough before contacting the path of Vale da Barca.

Once we recover the path of coming. We return quietly to the Lagoa Comprida and the car.

Magnificent route that you should not miss. It passes through the Serra da Estrela plateau but it will take you from the Lagoa Comprida to the enchanted Nave da Mestra returning for the visited one, and it is not for less, Covão dos Conchos.

Do not miss it! You will love it! Sure!
